A young man would look for a girl who is not related to him in any way, and was known to be of good behavior and discipline. He would approach her with the assistance of his sister and request her to be his patureishi. When accepted, the young man would be aske d to swear that he would strictly adhere to the stringed regulations that must be observed in that kind of relationship.
