Answer Text:
Ole Kaelo is the father to both Resian and Taiyo. Taiyo is his first born daughter while Resain is the second born. The treatment he gives to the girls is
not same. The two daughters occupied separate parts of his heart. He treats Taiyo with love but Resian with hate.

We are told early in the novel that Taiyo is the pride of Kaelo’s heart. She is a proof to his fatherhood. Ole Kaelo expected to have a baby boy when his wife got pregnant for the second time but to his utter disappointment, Resain was born and he tested her right from her birth. She could feel absence of a father since she was a baby and grew up resentful. This is why she treats them differently.

Taiyo is also more obedient and more forgiving of Kaelo's actions. Resian is a pessimist. She keeps on thinking that bad things are more likely to happen or emphasizing the bad part of a situation that’s why she would question everything before simply obeying. Ole Kaelo being a male chauvinist, does not like this hence hates her.

When Oloisudori asks him to give him Resian, though disturbed with the demand, he gives in since he doesn’t like her after all. He hates her even more for refusing to marry Oloisudori.

When Edward Olisudori ambushes him that he is coming for Taiyo the following day, he calls her to talk about the issue. He is abnormally kind to her raising an eyebrow. Resian turns him down and pleads with him to let their mother welcome the visitor. He gets annoyed and tells her to go away.

Taiyo hardly talks to her father unless answering whatever question she was asked which she did with utmost respect. Her father perceived her behavior exemplary and would always impress on Resian to emulate her sister. Such comparisons would always upset Resian and remained a reminder of her perceived failures.

Taiyo would always a void a clash between her and her father. This is why she has a special part in her father’s heart. In her attempt to get
information about Oloisudori’s visit, she realizes that her father’s temper is rising and drops the conversation by diverting to another topic. Resian is called and she talks about Egerton University which is not what the father calls her to discuss. Ole Kaelo gets irritated and sends her away. Resian’s character trait of facing things as they come no matter the consequences is what widens the gap between her and the father.

In conclusion the fact that Resian is born a girl, being exceptionally determined, and knows exactly what she wants results to the hatred the father shows towards her.
