India has an independent judiciary which is appointed by the President. The independence of the judiciary is guaranteed by the following:
Functions of the judiciary:
The judiciary performs the following functions:
-Arbitrates in disputes between the federal government and the states.
-Administers justice by listening to parties in dispute.
-Interprets the constitution and in the process makes new laws.
-Advises the Executive and Legislature on constitutional issues if sought for.
-Protects the fundamental rights of the citizens which are guaranteed by the constitution.
