Christian teaching on leisure
-The Christian view of leisure is derived from the story of creation in which God created the earth and everything in it in six days and rested on the seventh day.
-He blessed the seventh day and set it apart as a special day of rest and worship.
-Christian participation in work and leisure is therefore to be seen in relationship to the human being who is created in the image and likeness of God.
-In the Decalogue, the Israelites were commanded by God to observe the day of rest for themselves, their children, animals, slaves and foreigners.
-The Jewish people later used this day to commemorate their deliverance from Egypt.
-The Christian day of worship (Sunday or Sabbath) is honoured in line with the command in the Decalogue to keep the Sabbath day Holy. During this day Christians rest from work, give thanks for God’s providence and recreate their energies.
-In the book of Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, the bible teaches that there is a time for everything. As such there is time for work and time for rest.
-In the New Testament, Jesus encouraged His disciples to take some rest after doing some hard work.
For example, He took the disciples to a lonely place away from the crowds so that they could rest. Jesus also went to lonely places to pray.
-Jesus also spent His leisure time visiting His friends like Martha, Mary, Lazarus and Levi.
-He also attended a wedding at Cana in Galilee (John 2:1-11).
