Answer Text:
The meaning of vocation
The word vocation means being “called”. It is derived from the Latin word, Vocare, which means to “call”. Christians believe that every person has been called by God to do something. In this regard, whatever a person does, can be looked at as a vocation, for example, doctors, farm
workers, teachers, lawyers and bankers. In seeking his or her vocation, a Christian will seek God’s guidance, consult parents and counsellors in order to decide on the career she or he wants to pursue in the light of the following factors:
-Interests, strengths, talents and abilities. People only respond to what they like and are interested in. Individuals have been blessed with different gifts which they should use to glorify God.
-Available opportunities and openings for future development in a particular job.
-The need to serve others especially the church and the needy in society.
-Not to accept a job that is incompatible with being a Christian.
-Inclination or attraction to a certain kind of work
-The word vocation is used in the Bible to mean divine calling. In both the Old and New Testaments, God called
specific individuals to perform certain tasks. For example, He called prophets at different times to perform specific duties. Christians are called even today to perform specific responsibilities. For example, there are some who strongly feel that they are called to serve God as pastors, evangelists,
missionaries, doctors and teachers.
