Traditional African and Christian responses to problems related to family life today:
Family life today is faced with innumerable problems.
- In this section, we shall look at some of these problems which threaten family life today and the African and Christian responses to them.
Child abuse and domestic violence:
-Most children in families are victims of abuse from their parents and close relatives.
-They are abused in many different ways, for example, through child labour, beating, sexual molesting, cruelty and abandonment by their parents.
-Domestic violence is on the increase in families.:
-There are frequent fights and wife beating. These are brought about by drug abuse, alcoholism and economic hardships. In traditional African communities, members are supposed to adhere to good conduct and discipline.
-Cases of child abuse and domestic violence are isolated. If a father becomes cruel to his children or wife,
he is reported to clan elders and is punished.
-The Bible teaches parents to bring up their children in love and in the fear of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). As disciples of Jesus, parents are supposed to show love to their children.
-The Church is at the forefront of advocating for the rights of children and women .
- Churches are concerned with the welfare of families and have elaborate programmes on family life education, for example, The Kenya Catholic Secretariat and National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) have departments which deal with family life.
- They have services for counselling parents and advising them
on proper child-care and upbringing.
