CAUSES OF SOCIAL DISORDERS AND REMEDIES.
(a) Discrimination
- Discrimination means unfair treatment of a person or groups of people. It occurs when certain people are treated better than others.
Types of discrimination, their effects and possible.
(i) Racism.
- This is a form of discrimination that is based on unfair treatment of one race by another.
- A particular group of people believe that their race is more “superior” to the other races.
- Racism can also be expressed in the belief that members of one race have a higher intellectual capacity over other races, are better than others in understanding, performance and in general outlook.
- There is another form racism called “Xenophobia”.
Xenophobia is a fear or hatred of foreigners by indigenous people.
- Racism has adverse effects on the society. For example:
(i) The “inferior” races get demoralized and desperate.
(ii) There is racial tension, suspicion and bitterness by the “inferior” group.
(iii) Criminal acts such as stealing, mugging and murder.
(iv) General insecurity in society.
(v) Exploitation of the disadvantaged group.
(vi) The human dignity of the disadvantaged group is lowered.
