Factors influencing patterns of settlements.
(a) Topography – Valleys encourage linear settlements, islands result to nucleated settlement while mountains and ridges encourage dispersed settlement patterns.
(b) Climate - Low and unreliable rainfall, low temperatures and strong winds lead to disperse settlement.
(c) Types of farming – Areas where extensive farming is practiced have dispersed settlement patterns.
(d) Soils – Poor and infertile soils give rise to disperse settlement patterns.
(e) Pests and diseases – Areas prone to pests and diseases have dispersed settlement.
(f) Industries – Their presence encourage the development of nucleated settlements.
(g) H.E.P. generation sites give rise to nucleated settlement patterns.
(h) Presence of water bodies like lakes, rivers and seas give rise to both nucleated and linear settlement patterns.
