Zuyder zee project in Netherlands
Answer Text: Zuyder Zee Project-Zuyder Zee means Southern Sea.-The government of Netherlands decided to reclaim this part of the sea to take advantage of the fertile landscape under water.The assignment was given to a Dutch called Cornelius Lely in 1927-1932.-A dyke was constructed known as “the great dyke”-The dyke is 32 km and 7 metres above the sea level.-The construction of the great dyke took 5 years.(1927-1932).-Water enclosed by the great dyke was drained away to form lake Yssel (Ijssel).-L. Ijssel is today a fresh water lake because it is connected to R.Yssel, a tributary of R.Rhine.There are 5 large polders used for producing crops like barley, wheat, rice, rye, potatoes, beet roots, oats, vegetables and fruits.-In the damper parts of the polders, grazing is done.-The aim of Zuyder Zee project was to increase land for cultivation and control flooding.
