Answer Text:
Zuyder Zee Project
-Zuyder Zee means Southern Sea.
-The government of Netherlands decided to reclaim this part of the sea to take advantage of the fertile landscape under water.
The assignment was given to a Dutch called Cornelius Lely in 1927-1932.
-A dyke was constructed known as “the great dyke”
-The dyke is 32 km and 7 metres above the sea level.
-The construction of the great dyke took 5 years.(1927-1932).
-Water enclosed by the great dyke was drained away to form lake Yssel (Ijssel).
-L. Ijssel is today a fresh water lake because it is connected to R.Yssel, a tributary of R.Rhine.
There are 5 large polders used for producing crops like barley, wheat, rice, rye, potatoes, beet roots, oats, vegetables and fruits.
-In the damper parts of the polders, grazing is done.
-The aim of Zuyder Zee project was to increase land for cultivation and control flooding.
