Social organization of the LuoThe family was the basic social unit among the Luo. The Luo community valued large families and therefore practiced polygamy. Marriage among the Luo was exogamous. Several related families grouped together to form clans among the Luo. They believed in one supernatural being whom they called Nyasaye. The communities believed in the existence of ancestral spirits. Sacred shrines and trees existed. The Luo youths as their form of initiation extracted six lower teeth. After that they were allowed to marry.
