i. Which of the two curves represents the rate of the reverse reaction? Give a reason.
ii. What is the significance of points X and Y on the figure?
(b) State and explain the effect of an increase in pressure on the rates of the following reactions.
(i) #H_2(g) + CL_2#(g)#rightarrow# 2HCL(g)
(ii) #CH_3OH#(l)+#CH_3COOH#(l)#rightarrow# #CH_3COOCH_3#(l) + #H_2O#

Answer Text:
(a) (i) Curve I:The rate of reverse reaction increases with time.
(ii) At X-it is time at which the rate of forward reaction is equal to that of backward reaction and at Y – an equilibrium has been established.
(b)(i) It increases the rate of reaction by bringing gas molecules close to each other thus increasing the rate of collision between them.
(ii) It has no effect on the rate of reaction since liquids are incompressible.
