Solutions to the problems facing Cairo.
(a) The food shortage problem is being tackled through reclaiming land for agriculture. The Aswan high Dam provides water for irrigation.
(b) The housing problem is being addressed by constructing industries in the suburbs to reduce the population in the city.
(c) Traffic jams have been eased through the launching of the Cairo Metro in 1987, which was Africa’s first subway system, which serves the Ramses
station to the north and Helwan area to the south. It conveys 60,000 passengers per hour.
