MALE AND FEMALE RELATIONSHIPS IN TRADITIONAL AFRICAN PRACTICE:
-Male and female relationships in traditional African communities are determined by age, customs and taboos. When boys and girls are young they are not aware of their physical sexual differences. They relate freely with each other under the care of mothers. However, as they grow up, these differences are understood and emphasized. During childhood girls identify with their mothers. They are taught their roles and responsibilities of how to be good home makers by their mothers, grandmothers, aunts and other female relatives. Boys identify with
their fathers and other male relatives who teach them their roles and responsibilities. During important occasions such as feasts and dances, girls and boys are accompanied by their parents or other adults to ensure that they stay apart and do not misbehave. These controls are put in place to ensure that boys and girls are not tempted to engage in sex. Sex is preserved for marriage. At puberty, the physical differences between boys and girls become more pronounced. Boys and girls at this stage became aware of their sexual differences. Both boys and girls are given vigorous education especially during initiation ceremonies. The education prepares the girls and the boys on how to relate with
one another during adult life. After initiation, boys and girls are given opportunities to interact within their age groups, especially during traditional dances. However, there are rules and regulations and taboos that govern their relationships and interactions. As young adults, they also engage in serious courtship as they look for marriage partners.
-When young men and women enter into marriage, they relate as husband and wife. They have a right and obligation to have sex, produce children and take care of them. Sex is meant for procreation and not for pleasure. All members in the community have a duty and responsibility to ensure that both male and female relate to one another according to
the traditions and customs.
-Failure to maintain and uphold the expected male and female relationship attracts heavy fines and punishment.
