- Muscles respire anaerobically resulting in accumulation of lactic acid in the tissue causing fatigue/muscles crumps/ pain. Since it is toxic it must be broken down into carbon (IV) oxide and
energy therefore extra oxygen must be taken in to oxidize lactic acid
