Newspapers
Newspapers are a vital source of information the world over. Beside electronic media, newspapers play an important role in the dissemination of news and information to the general public. Unlike other types of media, newspapers are affordable even to those in the lower-income bracket, and are easily accessible.
In order to gain the maximum information from a newspaper, it is important to know what should be contained in one and how the news items are organized.
The front page of every newspaper has a headline. This identifies the hottest news in the issue. It is always printed in bold capital letters, in order to catch the eye of the reader. In this country, other topical stories are printed on the back page; and are referred to as the sub-headlines. In quality newspapers, the headlines address issues of social, economic or political importance whereas the tabloids will have headlines relating to current scandals or sensational issues.
The opinion of the editor, on topical matters is carried in a column known as the editorial. Through this column the editor comments on important issues, especially those that feature in the headlines. By expressing their views, editors hope to influence the readers to see issues from their point of view. These views could also be emphasized humorously through cartoons.
National news can be found throughout the newspaper under sub-headings. It mainly comprises of news which is of general interest to the public. Such articles could relate to development projects, genders issues, crime, natural disasters, the economy and particularly politics.
Depending on the quality of the newspaper, world news may occupy one to two middle pages. News correspondents placed all over the world report on various current issues emerging in the counties where they are based.
Most newspapers have business sections that report on world market trends, foreign exchange rates, local and international trade fairs and generally all matter related to economy, industry and trade. This information is usually printed within the second half of the newspaper.
Occasionally, events that are currently taking place locally or internationally, such as sports, agriculture shows, world trade fairs and technology exhibitions, are also given prominence in the newspapers. These are treated as feature articles and are often printed separately as supplements to the main body of the newspaper. A supplement may depending on its importance, be printed as a magazine within the main newspaper.
An opportunity for the general public to express their opinion on current issues is extended through a mailbox - Letters to the Editor. It is important to note that ideas expressed on this page are not the views of the editor or the newspaper, but personal to the writer.
Every newspaper carries a section on leisure and entertainment. The leisure page includes items on horoscopes, puzzles, games, jokes, fashions and holidays. These are meant to serve the interest of both elementary and advanced readers. In addition, the entertainment page carries information on radio and television programs, cinema and theatre guides, play reviews, visiting bands and entertainment roupes.
Advertisements for job and business as well as death and funeral announcement, are usually put towards the end of the newspaper. However, some advertisements may be put at strategic positions in the newspapers and some may occupy whole pages, depending on the financial resources of the advertising firm. The cost of advertising of course, increase according to whether colour is used or not.
Finally, there is a section on sports such as soccer, rugby, boxing, cricket, golf and other sports. These are placed just before the back page. In some newspapers sports summaries are placed on the back page for ease access. The sports pages give information on results of tournaments and schedules of matches to be played. It also contains general information on sports administrative bodies and highlights on sportsmen.
A newspaper is therefore, a bank of important information meant to serve a wide range of interests. It is important to note, however, that different newspapers organize their information in different ways. The arrangement of items and pictures in the newspaper is the prerogative of the Editor.
